| my Gargoyle Quarter (A)
- (C), 10x: Images (A) and (B) are the top and bottom halves of the
front of the Gargoyle Quarter. The Gargoyle Quarter appears to be the
same size, shape and thickness of a normal quarter, and stacks up perfectly
normally with other quarters. Furthermore, all of the edge and lettering
near the edge of the coin appear to be virtually normal, so if the Gargoyle
Quarter is an overstrike, most likely at least one area of the edge
would have been disrupted as well. Note that in both images there appears
to be a weird and ugly scar on Washington's face that nearly perfectly
follows the contours of his neck, cheek, eye, forehead and back of the
head, and that Image (B) looks like Washington's head was literally
ripped off his body. Image (C) is the image of a normal quarter. Also
note that Image (A) shows some kind of weird gouging just above and
behind Washington's head that appears to be like snakes or a wormhole,
and Image (B) shows similar weird gouging underneath the neck all the
way to the Denver "D" mark, and also note the weird slave-like
collar fitting perfectly around Washington's neck. This "collar"
has wording on it - 60X Images (L) - (O). The Gargoyle Quarter's surface
on both sides feels like the normal texture of a quarter. Other Curious Properties
A coin error expert emailed me about my Gargoyle Quarter. He stated that the quarter appeared to be a "glue job" to him - that is, he believes that someone glued a layer of some unknown substance or material onto the coin's surface to make it falsely appear as an overstrike. He suggested that I place the coin in acetone to remove the suspected glue. Since I didn't have acetone at the time, I placed the quarter obverse (head) side up in a medicine bottle cap and thoroughly spray it with WD-40 (WD-40 is a penetrating oil that is great for removing stickers from glass and metal surfaces, such as bumper stickers as it dissolves glues, adhesives and cements very well). I simply do not understand what the result was! When submerged into the WD-40, about 90% of the defects disappeared! However, no surface separation had resulted. Furthermore, the WD-40 did not change in any observeable manner, which would have indicated that it had dissolved something. However, when I removed the quarter from the WD-40 and rubbed the WD-40 off of it with a paper towel, I observed that all of the defects returned as before! I repeated this experiment 4 more times, each time using fresh WD-40, and each time getting the same results: About 90% disappearance of the observed defects while submerged in the WD-40, and the full return of the defects after rub-drying the WD-40 off! The best I can figure is that the WD-40 has some kind of optical or chemical properties not understood by me that somehow makes it possible to visibly look beneath the overstrike. There was about a 75% temporary disappearance of the defects when I later immersed the quarter in an acetone finger nail polish remover. No effect was observed on the defects when it was immersed in reverse osmosis water. I should also emphasize that the thickness of the Gargoyle Quarter is identical to that of normal quarters when measured with a micrometer, and it stacks up with other quarters perfectly normally with no observed gaps, lumpiness, sunken areas, or unevenness, and that before photographing the Gargoyle Quarter under my microscope camera, I had already cleaned it off with reverse osmosis water and a paper towel and observed and felt no difference in surface texture than normal quarters. Also, I did submerge the Gargoyle Quarter in finger nail polish remover with acetone for 3+ days, and it did not remove the defects. After I had reported that both the WD-40 and acetone treatments failed to remove their apparently imagined glue job on the Gargoyle Quarter, a couple of coin error experts then claimed that since these treatments failed to remove their claimed glue, adhesive, cement or plastic held-on layer from my quarter, that the cement must be epoxy instead. They stated that to remove their now-claimed epoxy held-on layer, I was to use a soldering iron, which would melt the epoxy and cause it to turn into a powder and then be easily observed and removed. So I then took a 90-watt soldering iron and held it onto the obverse side center of my quarter for 15 full minutes. While the entire quarter got so hot that it scorched the piece of wood it was resting on, there was no indication of any epoxy or any other unusual material on the quarter's surface, and the defects remained as before. I was then told by the coin error experts that unless I would send them the coin and pay for an evaluation, they had nothing more to contribute to analyzing my quarter. I again emphasized to them, but to no avail, that if a person were to ask to view my coin in Albuquerque at no expense to me and with the proviso of providing me a report, and had the credentials of a coin error expert, I would love to arrange for such an evaluation done under my scrutiny, and would charge the evaluator nothing. Clearly, if the Gargoyle Quarter is a unique and priceless artifact, I am not just going to send it off to anybody. That is the last I have heard from any of them! Therefore, whatever the surface of the Gargoyle Quarter is - it feels just like and appears just a normal quarter - it is now reasonable to believe that it can't be any glue, epoxy cement, other cement, adhesive or plastic held-on layer. However, focusing on what material or stamping process caused the defects on the quarter may be entirely missing the point. On one hand, for a person to have intentionally made these specific errors would have required a very high level of artistic skills, technical expertise, precision and time, and it is unreasonable to believe that anyone would undertake the effort - unless the purpose of the defects were to intentionally convey some type of message or warning, or hide some type of secret communications, or to in some way sabotage our money by scaring people into not using coins - virtually ruling out intentional defects for prank purposes. On the other hand, the probability that such errors randomly occurred by pure accident would practically defy the laws of probability - not far off from sitting down a chimp in front of a typewriter and having him produce Hamlet from random keystrokes. If the defects were intentional as they certainly appear to be, our greatest concerns by far should be about who or what is behind the defects and their motives, and leave the investigators to determine for historical or legal purposes whether the defects were caused by multi-strikes at the mint or some weird after-mint resurfacing of the quarter. With its weird images and inexplicable construction, could the Gargoyle Quarter be some kind of alien message, ominous alien warning, alien intervention, or of a supernatural origin? Or some kind of Government sabotage of our money, Government secret code, Government trickery, or ominous Government warning? My Experience with the Yahoo! Newsgroup on Coin Errors
In my sincere efforts to get to the bottom of my Gargoyle Quarter mystery, one of the things I did was to join the Yahoo! Coin Error Newsgroup to query their 'experts' about my quarter. You will find that I have made a great effort to photograph and document my coin. These 'experts' first stated that my coin was probably a "glue job," and that if I would just subject it to an acetone bath, I would certainly prove that to myself. So I subjected my coin to not only a 3+ day acetone bath, but also to a WD-40 bath, but the defects remained. These 'experts' then "clarified" their suggestions, and stated that their claimed "glue" was probably epoxy and since the acetone would not work on epoxy, that I should apply a hot soldering iron to burn off the epoxy to expose its presence. So I again bowed to their wishes and subjected my coin to a hot 90 watt soldering iron for 15 minutes. Still, the defects remained. They then "clarified" again by stating that their claimed "glue" was probably of a type that was impervious to both acetone AND high heat, but of course could not specify which glue that might be! I then inquired to them that out of curiousity how prevalent was coin "glue jobs" or were they basically error coin experts' imaginations or mythology. I got no answer there! During this back-and-forth process, they increasingly applied pressure on me to send my coin to one of their members and to pay for his evaluation. Up to then, I thought that this Newsgroup was non-commercial, but it sure seemed very commercial to me. I had repeatedly refused to mail them my coin because I was not about to mail to strangers an item that in my view could be worth a very great amount of money. No one in their right mind would do that. Would you? Finally, one of them pulled off his mask to reveal his real self and viciously accused me of being a "crackpot" trying to hoax the group because I had refused to mail my coin to one of them. The group Moderator not only permitted the publication on their Newsgroup of this unfounded, asinine and slanderous attack but even commented on it. I then replied with: "I guess when you can't explain
something, you respond by verbally attacking them. Be advised:
The Moderator then immediately not only deleted my post but my entire thread! Again, until I posted my reply, the Moderator never deleted the unfounded attack against me, but immediately deleted me when I had the audacity to frankly reply with what I clearly believe to be the truth. Hmmm. It seems to me that these types of groups exist for one and only one real purpose: To con and intimidate people out of their valuable coins - if you are not fast enough in turning over your valuables to them or question them in any manner about obediently doing so, they then personally, viciously and slanderously attack you - if you even think about replying to defend yourself, they delete you. Three additional observations about this Newsgroup: (1) Members repeatedly "suggested" that I send my quarter for evaluation - not to them - but to someone else in the Newsgroup. Clearly, Federal law states that if a person receives an unsolicited item in the mail sent to him/her intentionally - regardless of how valuable or if sent by Registered Mail - he/she may keep that item as an outright free gift. Since this third person did not himself/herself request the coin, he/she could have legally kept it for free. (2) At no time did anyone state what the evaluation fee would be. One of the things you fast learn to avoid in this life are contracts where the ultimate cost is not revealed to you until after you enter the contract. (3) At no time did anyone present to me any hard credentials as to the level of coin expertise of themselves or anyone else they appeared to know on this Newsgroup. Nor even the faintest claims as to reputation for honesty and fair dealing. For all I know, (A) They could all be real coin experts, or (B) They could all be convicted felons who spent an hour studying up on coin defects. Or some could be (A) and some could be (B). Yet, I was supposed to send these total strangers a possibly priceless coin?! Hmmm. If you, too, have had any bad experience with this Newsgroup, please let me know. That's my personal opinion, folks. DO YOU HAVE A SIMILAR COIN?: If you have a coin with weird defects similar to mine, please take a photograph of it (both sides and all areas). If you do not have a microscope camera, use a high-quality 35 mm camera, macro lens, the highest resolution possible film, and excellent halogen (not incandescent) lighting. All shots should be extremely still and focused. Then send me the negatives and positives so I can put them under my microscope camera and take decent highly magnified shots. If I feel that your coin is indeed comparable to mine or of about an equally interesting find, I will then provide you a written report at no cost to you based on my lay observations. These conditions fully apply: (1) I may use any or all of the images royalty-free personally and/or commercially. (2) You will charge me nothing for all of your time, efforts, costs and expenses for taking and providing me your images. (3) I take no responsibility for anything anyone sends me - please don't send me the coin itself or any negatives or positives you can't spare (solution: take duplicate shots or have duplicate negatives and/or positives made). However, if you do send me the coin (at your own risk), I will do my best to return it to you in the condition it arrived in (unless you explicitly state in writing, I will not subject your coin to any authenticity test or treatment). This is Not the
Only Weird Find I've Made
